Reason one: the packing list

The inspector compares what is written with what he sees. Writing “household items” or “furniture” gives him nothing to compare, so he has to open the shipment and inspect it item by item. A list detailed by item and quantity usually passes without opening.

Reason two: documents

• An expired ID or residence permit: it may be overlooked elsewhere, but it stops the process at the border.
• A consignee name that differs from their document: abbreviating or spelling it differently stops delivery.
• No proof of relocation for furniture shipments: used furniture may then be treated as goods rather than personal effects.
• No certificate of origin or commercial invoice for commercial shipments: a shipment eligible for preferential treatment may become dutiable.
• A parcel count that doesn’t match the packing list: one extra, unlisted box triggers a full inspection.

Reason three: a restricted item you forgot

• Border congestion: Eid, holidays and weekends increase traffic. It can’t be eliminated, but it can be reduced by scheduling loading so the truck reaches the border at quieter times.
